Thematic First Grade

Students who participate in Thematic First Grade A will complete a variety of activities that will introduce news skills and help master other skills. The activities are auditory and hands-on, but students will still need some adult help to navigate through the course. The consistent structure of the course helps the student become comfortable with online learning. Interactive reading materials encourage beginning readers to become independent readings. Sorting and ordering skills provide lots of practice.
Activities in the course will challenge students to comprehend what they listen to or read using think aloud, retelling, summarizing, connecting to prior knowledge, simple note-taking, and non-linguistic representations. Students will learn how to write sentences to create a story, and learn the importance of using punctuation, spaces and proper capitalization. Science themes and non-fiction text introduce students to the investigative process and reading for meaning. Finally, students will participate in a variety of activities that will allow them to understand patterns, data collection, two and three-dimensional shapes and apply concepts of addition and subtraction to solve problems up to ten.
