In this course you will experience the novels, short stories, poetry, and non-fiction from countries around the world. You will discover that the writers in this course have ideas and lives as interesting as their work. You will discover many writers have unique writing styles, unique ideas, unique lives, and unique approaches to their art. You will also have the chance to do some unique work of your own. By reading contemporary work and some work of the 20th century you will also discover that "no matter what a writer's origins, certain themes and events have been hard to run away from in the 20th and early 21st centuries." As you read, it is my hope that you will come to an understanding that, ". . .reading literature from around the world is unlikely to teach you everything there is to know about a culture. But it may help. . ." Along this journey you will use technology, writing, reflection, vocabulary, research, and other academic and personal skills to help you learn to enter the world of your community, your country, and your world. As the poet Gwendolyn Brooks said, "I believe that we should all know each other, we human carriers of so many pleasurable differences. To not know is to doubt, to shrink from, sidestep or destroy."

http://www.blendedschools.net/curriculumcatalog/coursedetail.php?courseid=MA.09.GeometryATFv3.Bnet4copy

What is geometry? A dictionary might say it is the study of shapes and configurations. An even better dictionary might say it is the study of figures in a space of a given number of dimensions and of a given type. A comic might say life is pointless without geometry (and you may or may not get it). But I want you to think of geometry as a game. It's a game that starts with a few rules that we must accept, like passing "GO" brings us $200, or five cards of the same suit are called a flush. Just like any other game, if you play it the same way long enough, even math can get boring. So, mathematicians have been twisting those rules and adding to the game for centuries. For instance, when German mathematician Bernhard Riemann asked the question, "What if parallel lines could intersect?" he started a new branch of geometry that led to Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Think of geometry as a game whose rules you need to learn, and then, all I ask is that you play the game.

"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." - Martin Luther King Jr.
As this course begins, you will be engaged in the promises of the New Frontier and fight for equality of the Civil Rights Movement. Decade by decade, president by president, you will engage in the American quest for freedom, equality, stability, justice and world dominance. As Dr. King dreamed of "...children living in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character..." in the 1960's through the election of Barack Obama in 2008, American History is an extraordinary story to leadership, conflict, failure, and success. As this course begins, you will be engaged in difficulties that resulted from the Civil War and the nation's attempt at reconstruction and expansion. Decade by decade, president by president, you will engage in the American quest for freedom, equality, stability, justice and world dominance.

Course Enduring Understandings:

Mathematical functions are relationships that assign each member of one set (domain) to a unique member of another set (range), and the relationship is recognizable across representations.

Families of functions exhibit properties and behaviors that can be recognized across representations.

Functions can be transformed, combined, and composed to create new functions in mathematical and real world situations

Bivariate data can be modeled with mathematical functions that approximate the data well and help us make predictions based on the data.

Degree and direction of linear association between two variables is measurable.

Welcome to this course in World History with a focus on the development and impact of Western Civilization. The official historical starting point of this course is the 1450 A.D., which is generally considered to be the beginning of the Modern Period. However, to put this time period in context, you will briefly examine the historical background preceding the Modern Period. This first course will then progress to help set the stage for the events of the 20th Century. I want to preface this course by noting that it is important to keep in mind that, although it is history course, the units may not follow a perfect chronological order. That is to say that the study of one time period does not necessarily start chronologically where another ends. All of the time periods studied in these units overlap one another, and because of that, have profound effects on each other.

Topics include: Functions, Graphs, Limits, Derivatives and Integrals. Conceptual understanding of the essential concepts of calculus is emphasized in theory and practice. Professional mathematics organizations have strongly endorsed the use of graphing calculators in mathematics instruction, and consequently these calculators are also used throughout the course and required for a portion of the AP exam. Due to the rigorous nature of this course, students who are considering taking AP Calculus should seek the advice of their current mathematics teacher.

http://www.blendedschools.net/curriculumcatalog/coursedetail.php?courseid=SS.12.APWorldHistory.Bnet4copy

Welcome to Advanced Placement (AP) World History! The purpose of this course is two-fold. First, this course will prepare students for college World History courses, by exposing them to the appropriate content, as well as potential expected productives, such as essays, oral presentations, and PowerPoint presentations. Secondly, this course will directly prepare students to take, and successfully complete, the AP exam. This course will give students the opportunity to learn about the world that came before them, and how those preceding civilizations still affect modern society. To be successful, students will need to: follow the course guidelines, complete all of the assignments, and dedicate an adequate amount of time to reading and preparation. This is not a race. Students will need to take time to reflect on everything that they read and do. Good luck!

Original - Secondary - Sociology A - 07/31/09

http://www.blendedschools.net/curriculumcatalog/coursedetail.php?courseid=SS.11V2SociologyATF.Bnet4copy

Sociology is the study of human relationships. This definition, though simple, actually encompasses many ideas. During this class, we will examine how society operates and take an in-depth look at the issues that Americans face everyday. Some of these issues will be controversial and thought provoking. In this class, all opinions and thoughts are welcomed. However, many of your classmates will not share your thoughts and beliefs. It is essential that you respect the views of your peers.

This class is discussion based, and you will be required to maintain a blog and regularly post to discussion boards.

In conclusion, we hope that this class will encourage you to step "outside the box" and begin to question, in depth, why society operates the way it does.
